First thing you need to know What is Safe Mode ? Safe mode is a diagnostic mode of a computer operating system (OS). It can also refer to a mode of operation by application software. In Windows, safe mode only allows essential system programs and services to start up at bootSafe mode is intended to help fix most, if not all problems within an operating system.

If your system is infect with harmful viruses, Malware etc. lack of sandboxing and abundant use of third-party programs make the OS vulnerable to unidentifiable attacks. In such cases, we have to use Safe mode on Windows 10 to inspect and clean your PC from harmful programs.

So we discuss now all basics to advanced methods to boot Windows 10 in Safe mode. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode [It’s only for working systems]

We have some easy and straightforward methods so you will not have any issues booting Windows 10 into safe mode.

Method 1. Press Shift and Restart Your System

1. This is the easiest way to start Windows 10 in Safe mode. Just open the Start Menu and click on Power Menu and press the “Shift” button while clicking on the “Restart” menu.

2. Your System will restart to “Choose an Option” screen. Here, click on the “Troubleshoot” menu.

3. If your System is not booting into “Choose an Option” screen then go back to the Windows Sign-in or Login screen and restart the PC while pressing the “Shift” key.

4. On the next screen, click on the “Advanced Options”.

5. Now, click on “Startup Settings” for modifying startup option.

6. On this window, click on the “Restart” button to restart into the Startup menu.

7. Finally, You will see this option to boot into Safe mode. Press “4” key to boot into Safe mode. We have safe mode with Internet or Safe Mode with Command Prompt If you want access internet in Safe Mode Press “5” key to boot into safe mode

8. The PC will reboot again and Windows 10 automatically start in Safe mode. Now you can check and inspect your PC.

9. To Coming out of the Safe mode, simply restart your Windows and you will be back in the normal mode of Windows.

Method 2. Advanced Startup

1. You can start Windows 10 in Safe mode through Advance Startup as well. Just open Windows Setting or you can also use shortcut key to open the Windows Setting “Windows Key + I”. After open this, click on “Update and Security” menu.

2. After that, click on the “Recovery” tab and click on the “Restart Now” button.

3. Your PC will restart to “Choose an Option” screen.  Now You can follow these steps shown in the above section. Finally, Windows 10 will start in Safe mode.

Method 3. Press the F8 Key

In earlier versions of Windows, pressing the F8 button while booting Windows would open the startup menu. It was the easiest and best way to boot into Windows Safe mode. Nevertheless, there is a neat way to enable booting into Safe mode through the F8 key. Now, I am going to show you.

1. Press the “Windows” key once and type “cmd”. Command Prompt will appear in the search result. Then click on “Run as Administrator” in the right pane. After that, it will open confirmation window. click on “Yes” to confirm your action.

2. Now just copy this command and paste it in the Command Prompt window. After that, just hit enter and the changes will be made.

3. After this, restart your PC and press the F8 key while booting, you can see Advanced Windows Startup menu. From here, you can simply start Windows 10 in Safe mode.

4. In case, if you want to revert the changes, open Command Prompt window again and paste this command. Now, press the enter button and the F8 key functionality will be disabled.

Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode [For Non-functioning Systems]

If your PC is not booting and keeps showing a blank screen then you will have to take another way to start Windows 10 in Safe mode. In some case, When some programs create a problem for you and slow or corrupt system file then you need to fix properly. You will have to boot into Safe mode through the Windows recovery environment. In this section, I am going to show you how can start Windows 10 in Safe mode on non-functioning Systems.

1. Interrupt the Normal Boot Process

Yes, you read that right. In order to trigger the Windows recovery environment, you must need to interrupt the normal boot process by turning off the System and turning it on for three consecutive times. winRE( Windows recovery environment ) automatically finds there is a problem with the startup process. Here, I will show you how to do it quickly.

1. Turn on the System and wait for the loading Windows logo screen to appear. After that, press the power button for straight 5 to 10 seconds to turn off the PC forcibly.

2. Again, repeat this process turn on the systems and turn it off similar to the above step. Repeat the same steps one more time.

3. Following three consecutive interruptions, turn on the System again. This time the System will boot into Windows recovery environment(winRE). At first, it will try to repair the system by itself. so wait for some time.

4. In case, winRE( Windows recovery environment ) fails to repair the system, it will provide you “Advanced Option” of windows to repair the System. Click on it and it will take you to “Choose an Option” screen.

5. From here, you can easily boot into the Safe mode of Windows. I give you the complete steps with screenshots in the first section above so check it if you have any issue regarding this. If you forget any step then, you can follow this path to find the Safe mode option.

Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Startup Settings -> Restart -> Press “4” or “F4” key to boot into Safe mode.

2. Use a Windows 10 Installation Disc or a Bootable Drive

If these methods didn’t work or your System is not even booting or showing any working OS Sign then follow this method. You will need a Windows 10 installation disc or a bootable drive.

1. Insert the Windows installation disc or a bootable drive on your System. After that, turn on your PC. Your PC should detect the external Windows installation device. You will see something like this.

2. After that, installer window will appear. Select your language, country, and keyboard layout and click on the “Next” button.

3. Here, click on “Repair your computer”.

4. Finally, it will open “Choose an Option” menu. Here, click on “Troubleshoot”.

5. On the next screen, click on “Advanced Options” and then click on “Command Prompt”.

6. Here, type this command and hit enter. It will force Windows 10 to boot into the Safe mode by default.

7. After that, close the Command Prompt window and go back to the “Choose an Option” screen. then, click on “Continue” to start Windows 10 in Safe mode.

8. Your PC should boot fine into Safe mode. Now, you can clean your PC from bad programs and viruses.

9. If, you want to move back to the normal mode, open Command Prompt again by following the same process mentioned in the middle of this article. After that, type this command and hit enter. This will reset the boot menu to the normal mode.

10. Now come back to “Choose an Option” screen and click on “Continue” to boot into the normal mode. That’s it.

Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode and Fix Your PC

If your PC is working fine and if you are facing problems booting into your Windows 10 System, then I am telling you two alternate methods which can save your time. Method 4. Configure your Boot Menu

1. You can configure the Boot menu to forcefully start in Safe mode. You have to do is press “Windows + R” keys simultaneously to open the Run window. after open this now you, type “msconfig” and hit enter.

2. A System Configuration screen will open. then, switch to the “Boot” tab and click on the checkbox for “Safe Boot”. then, click on the “Ok” button and close the window.

3. In a few seconds, a small window or screen will appear to asking you to restart your system. Just click on the “Restart” button and your system will instantly restart and boot into the Safe mode.

4. if you want to go back to the normal mode, open again previous work and uncheck the “Safe Boot” option. then, click on “Ok” and restart your System. After this, Windows 10 will boot into the normal mode.
